Head of Engineering and Development

A new week is here, you start together with your team in the day start where you discuss ongoing issues and daily activities. Then the planning meeting is on the agenda and you discuss the production planning of sold projects. On Wednesday, an audit of the calibration lab is scheduled. You prepare this with the colleagues involved, you also have some contact with an external consultant for final advice. Later in the week you investigate whether you can apply for a patent on a new development and you check the hours in the system for which A.P. van den Berg receives a subsidy. Another MT meeting is scheduled in which the progress in the innovation plan is on the agenda. In your position of Head of Engineering and Development, the week has flown by as always.

We will first introduce ourselves

We are A.P. van den Berg, an innovative family business from Heerenveen that designs, builds and delivers CPT systems for onshore and offshore soil investigations. Our customers are spread all over the world. We are continuously working on innovations in the field of CPT systems. So, we literally and figuratively go into the depths. The equipment, instruments, software, etc. are completely developed and made in-house. Our company consists of about 60 employees and the company culture is characterized by: pride in your work, respect for each other, working together and continuing to learn and adapt. We are growing in various areas. We don’t do crazy things, but we are far from standing still. Not in our products, but not in our operations either.

As Head of Engineering and Development:

You will lead a multidisciplinary team of 12 Engineers and 1 Quality, Safety and Environment (QSE) Coordinator. The specialties of the engineers are in the field of mechatronics, i.e. electrical engineering, software, and mechanical engineering, among others. The team focuses on development of new technology and applications as well as sold projects.

You are part of the Management Team of A.P. van den Berg and are therefore involved in company-wide decision-making on, for example, (strategic) annual plans and policy matters. Furthermore, you are systematic, realistic and good at setting priorities and decision-making. You are responsible for departmental planning and agreed targets.

What do we ask of you?

Of course, we are primarily looking for a Head of Engineering and Development who fits us perfectly in terms of vision, character and motivation.

In addition, our ideal candidate is in all likelihood:

• Someone with a Bachelor or Master’s degree in engineering;
• Experienced in leading a multidisciplinary team of professionals in an internationally oriented engineering field;
• Sufficiently technically savvy to go into depth with colleagues;
• Focused on creating and maintaining oversight for the department;
• Someone who can deal with the various challenges and dynamics of an Engineering & Development department;
• Someone who can look beyond the borders of their own department and think along with other disciplines such as Production, Sales and Finance.

With whom and for whom do you work?

At A.P. van den Berg you work together with your colleagues within the Management Team and you report to the Managing Director.

But above all you will of course work together with the colleagues from your E&D team consisting of 12 engineers and 1 QSE Coordinator.
You also work together with colleagues from the calibration lab. Quality, Safety and Environment (QSE) includes the management of ISO 9001 and 17025.
